Family Brings Lawsuit In Scooter Accident

Ashanti Jordan was riding a Lime scooter around Fort Lauderdale when she was struck by a car at an intersection in December. She has been in a coma ever since. Her mother, Tracy Jordan is mad. She’s angry that the company, Lime, does little to ensure that riders and those around them are safe. In fact, there is no experience needed at all. A person can unlock the scooters with their phone and take off down the sidewalk or roadway.

“Every time I see someone on a scooter, it’s like, they don’t understand the danger behind these scooters,” says Tracy Jordan. Her daughter was taking the scooter to her job as a security guard.

Vladimir Tsirkin & Associates understands the complexity of these cases and wants to help. If you need a scooter accident attorney in Fort Lauderdale, call us today so we can work on securing the compensation you deserve.

A New Problem

Last November, the city passed an ordinance prohibiting scooter riders from using these scooters on the roadways. They are now supposed to use the sidewalk only. Since these scooters have become legal in Fort Lauderdale, 320,000 rides have been taken on them.

For a moment, we need to look at the dangers electric scooters pose:

  • In the case above, Ashanti Jordan was not wearing a helmet. Scooter companies do not require the use of a helmet for a person to ride.
  • Riders do not have to have any experience riding scooters before unlocking them and zooming off down the sidewalk.
  • Sidewalks are filled with other people and obstacles that could cause a rider to crash and get injured.
  • The non-rider pedestrians can, and do, suffer from injuries in an impact with a scooter rider.
  • Discarded scooters become a tripping hazard for pedestrians all over the city.

From December 1 to January 31, there were 40 incidents involving scooters in the city. In 31 of those incidents, a person had to be taken to the hospital.

In the case of the Jordan family, they have filed a lawsuit claiming that the rider instructions that Lime’s app offers are wrong. They claimed the app instructed Ashanti to use the scooter on the roadway as opposed to the sidewalk, directly contradicting the Fort Lauderdale ordinance that says otherwise.
