Scooter Accident Raises More Questions

Pedestrian Accident
Jan 26, 2019

It seems like 2018 was the year of the scooter in so many major US cities and Fort Lauderdale was no exception. As their popularity continues to explode, we are seeing more and more reports of injuries, both to the people who ride the scooters and pedestrians around them.

Earlier this month, a woman was seriously hurt when she fell off her scooter in the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel. The woman and a friend were riding their electric scooters on the sidewalk in the tunnel when she fell. She suffered a concussion and a broken bone. The scooter came from the Dockless Mobility Program that began late last year. Tens of thousands of people have taken bicycle and scooter rides through the program, but how safe are they?

“We’ve has a series of accidents on them and we’re tracking the number of accidents on them now,” said a hospital worker.

At Vladimir Tsirkin & Associates P.A. we know that electric scooters are just one of many ways pedestrians face danger around our city’s streets. If you need a Fort Lauderdale pedestrian accident attorney, you can count on us to be by your side.

The Many Dangers

Florida is a popular tourist destination. Because of that, we have a bunch of pedestrians in and around the roadway. As you can see in the story above, scooters are a growing concern, but the state has seen its fair share of pedestrian accidents each year.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles gives us some alarming numbers for the latest reporting year:

  • 9,410 pedestrian crashes
  • 649 pedestrian fatalities
  • 8,126 pedestrian injuries

If you look at those numbers, you can see that most pedestrian accidents result in an injury or fatality. Pedestrians do not have armor – no metal frames or airbags are there to protect them. When a person is struck, they absorb the full impact. We commonly see the following serious injuries as a result of pedestrian accidents:

  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Major lacerations
  • Major internal organ damage
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries

How They Happen

So many pedestrian accidents are preventable. Even if a person is walking, jogging, or riding safely near the roadway, they are still susceptible to driver mistakes. All too often, we see people struck by drunk, distracted, or speeding drivers.

Other times, pedestrians are struck by people on bicycles, mopeds, and yes, electric scooters.
