Scooter Rider Dies In Car Crash

Bird Scooter Accident

We know that electric scooters have become a very popular way for locals and tourists alike to get around. They are fairly easy to use and offer a decent alternative to riding a bike or walking. However, what happens when an injury happens while a person is using a scooter?

At Vladimir Tsirkin & Associates, we are here for you if you need a Fort Lauderdale Bird scooter accident attorney. Our team will work tirelessly to secure the compensation you deserve. Today, we want to talk about the electric scooter crash that took life last month.

What Happened Here?

We have heard story after story about electric scooters causing major injuries in Fort Lauderdale and in other cities across the country. However, last month, the city saw its first death as a result of a scooter incident.

This incident happened in early April when a man rode a scooter along North Federal Highway and collided with a Mazda sedan. Despite the best efforts of paramedics on the scene, the scooter rider died from his injuries.

These scooters have led to many complaints in the city, including:

  • Underage riders
  • Riders who do not wear helmets
  • Scooters crowding pedestrians on sidewalks
  • Riders on the roadways

Despite the safety concerns, the scooters have not been banned in the city.

It is not uncommon for us to see a wide array of injuries in the aftermath of scooter crashes. These injuries can include:

  • Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)
  • Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or road rash

There are various groups of victims in these incidents including the riders themselves, pedestrians struck by them, as well as pedestrians who trip over discarded scooters. In December, Broward County Circuit Court Judge Susan Alspector was hospitalized after she was struck by a scooter while she was jogging.

In February, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said they responded to at least 35 scooter injuries, with ages ranging from 14 to 62. As the summer months arrive, we are sure to see these numbers increase dramatically.

In the aftermath of these crashes, there will be many questions about who is liable for covering these expenses.

  • Will it be the scooter rider?
  • Does the scooter company take the blame?
  • What about the city for allowing the scooters to operate in the first place with relatively little regulation in place?
